Hong Kong's Independent Commission Against Corruption announced on Friday the arrest of eight individuals connected to the renovation work at a high-rise apartment complex where a devastating fire claimed 128 lives.

The arrested individuals include seven men and one woman, aged between 40 and 63 years. Among those detained were scaffolding subcontractors, directors of an engineering consultation firm, and project managers who had been overseeing the renovation operations.

In conjunction with the arrests, the anti-corruption agency conducted searches at the suspects' offices, confiscating relevant documentation and banking records. The corruption investigation was initiated on Thursday, immediately following the deadly blaze.

Authorities are now examining possible corruption links to the renovation project that may have contributed to the tragic incident that resulted in one of Hong Kong's deadliest fires in recent history.
