President Trump has threatened to assume control over Greenland.
Denmark's government has established a specialized "night watch" team within their foreign ministry dedicated to monitoring US President Donald Trump's activities and statements during Danish nighttime hours.
According to Politiken's report, this monitoring program commences daily at 5 pm local time. Personnel are tasked with tracking Trump's public statements, social media activities, and other movements. By 7 am, they produce a comprehensive report summarizing significant developments before distributing this information to appropriate government departments and officials.
Rather than requiring individual officials to constantly monitor their devices for US news updates, Denmark's foreign office implemented a "collective effort" strategy to maintain awareness of Trump's activities.
This system is believed to have been established following diplomatic tensions between Copenhagen and Washington regarding Greenland, after Trump threatened to take control of the Arctic island during his first presidential term in 2019.
Earlier this year, Trump renewed his controversial interest in Greenland, stating, "We strongly support your right to determine your own future, and if you choose, we welcome you into the United States of America."
Responding to Trump's repeated suggestions about incorporating the Arctic territory into the United States, Danish Defence Minister Troels Lund Poulsen told public broadcaster DR, "US annexation of Greenland won't happen," emphasizing that the region's future remains in the hands of Greenland's residents.
According to Politiken, the "night watch" represents just one example of how Danish diplomacy and civil service have been forced to adapt to the unpredictability of Trump's second administration.
"It is fair to say that the situation in Greenland and the time difference between Denmark and the United States was quite an important factor in introducing this arrangement during the spring," a source close to the foreign office revealed to The Guardian.
Jacob Kaarsbo, former chief analyst at the Danish Defence Intelligence Agency, commented, "As we have always known, the idea that the US was Denmark's largest and most important ally is dead. Alliances are built on common values and a common threat perception. Trump shares neither of those with us, and I would argue he doesn't share it with most Europeans."
