Imran Khan suffered gunshot wounds during a violent incident on November 4, 2022
Speculation regarding former Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan's death has grown substantially in recent times, following an Afghan media outlet's report suggesting he had died while detained in Adiala Jail. In response, his son Kasim Khan has requested evidence that his father is still alive and called for his immediate release.
As questions about his current condition and location persist, public interest has renewed in the 2022 assassination attempt when Khan survived after being shot in the leg.
The violent incident occurred in November 2022 when Khan, aged 70 at the time, was leading a protest procession through Punjab province's Wazirabad district. The former cricket star and Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) party leader had organized a convoy of vehicles to pressure the government for early elections, intending to conclude the demonstration in Islamabad.
While addressing supporters from a shipping container positioned on a truck, an armed assailant opened fire. Multiple gunshots struck the vehicle, with one bullet hitting Khan in his right leg. He was subsequently transported to a hospital in Lahore, with PTI officials confirming the injury to his shin. Later, a senior advisor told the BBC that the government was "directly involved" in orchestrating the attack.
Multiple videos from the scene spread across social media platforms, showing Khan ducking as gunshots erupted while those nearby attempted to protect him. According to reports, additional footage captured him conscious with his right leg bandaged as aides hurried him away in a vehicle.
Other video evidence emerged showing a man in apparent police custody with his hands restrained behind him, claiming he had intended to assassinate the former premier.
The Guardian reported that rally footage showed a gunman being tackled by another individual as he attempted to discharge what was described as a 9mm automatic weapon. In the ensuing chaos, crowds dispersed while some supporters pursued and apprehended the attacker.
Videos distributed by Al Jazeera revealed the chaotic aftermath as Khan sustained the bullet wound.
Law enforcement later released a video confession from the suspect who allegedly shot Khan. Though the circumstances surrounding the recording remained unclear, the man was asked about his motives for the shooting. He stated, "He was misguiding the people. I wanted to kill him. I tried to kill him."
