Lavrov indicated Russia was awaiting the amended Ukraine peace plan, emphasizing it must align with Putin-Trump summit agreements.
Moscow:
Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov stated on Tuesday that any revised peace plan for Ukraine must reflect the "spirit and letter" of agreements reached between President Vladimir Putin and US President Donald Trump during their Alaska summit.
During a Moscow press conference, Lavrov mentioned Russia had positively received the initial US peace proposal for Ukraine—which Kyiv and its allies considered too favorable to Moscow—but was currently waiting for an amended "interim" version following Washington's consultations with Ukraine and European partners.
Lavrov warned that if the amended proposal failed to reflect what Putin and Trump discussed during their August meeting in Alaska, Russia—whose representatives were reportedly preparing for additional talks with the US in Abu Dhabi later Tuesday—would take a significantly different stance on the initiative.
"Our assessments remain valid in the sense that the key provisions of Trump's (original) plan are based on understandings reached in Anchorage at the Russian-American summit in August this year. And these principles are generally reflected in the plan, which we welcomed," Lavrov explained.
The initial proposal had reportedly permanently excluded NATO membership for Ukraine, limited its military to 600,000 personnel, suggested transferring the remainder of Donbas to Russia as a demilitarized zone, and required Kyiv to conduct elections within 100 days.
Reports indicate all these provisions have since been modified or temporarily set aside.
Lavrov clarified that Moscow wasn't pressuring Washington but hoped it would share the latest interim text when ready.
"If the spirit and letter of Anchorage is erased in terms of the key understandings we have established then, of course, it will be a fundamentally different situation (for Russia)," Lavrov cautioned.
