External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met with UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper during the G7 Foreign Ministers Meeting held in Canada. The two leaders reaffirmed their commitment to the India-UK Vision 2035, which aims to strengthen bilateral cooperation across several key sectors.
In a social media post on X on Wednesday, Jaishankar stated, "Glad to meet UK Foreign Secretary @YvetteCooperMP on the sidelines of #G7 FMM in Canada today. Acknowledged the positive momentum in our relations and reaffirmed the India-UK Vision 2035 for further deepening cooperation across key areas."
The "India-UK Vision 2035" represents a strategic roadmap designed to guide bilateral relations over the next decade. It outlines a time-bound program of action focusing on economy and growth, technology and innovation, defense and security, climate action, and education.
According to the vision document, both nations will build upon their strong foundations to establish an intellectual partnership that responds to emerging opportunities, adapts to rapid technological advancements, and strengthens collaboration in education and research. This partnership aims to create a skilled, forward-looking talent pool ready to address global challenges and contribute to a safe, sustainable future for all.
Jaishankar is visiting Canada from November 11 to 13 to participate in the G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting with Outreach Partners at the invitation of Canada's Minister of Foreign Affairs, Anita Anand. The Ministry of External Affairs stated that his participation reflects India's continued commitment to working with international partners in addressing global challenges and amplifying the Global South's voice in international forums.
The External Affairs Minister is also expected to hold several bilateral meetings on the sidelines of the G7 gathering.
The G7 Foreign Ministers' Meeting is taking place in Niagara, a scenic region in Canada famous for its iconic Falls, on November 11 and 12. The meeting brings together ministers from G7 member countries—Canada, France, Germany, Italy, Japan, the United Kingdom, the United States, and the European Union—alongside outreach nations including India, Australia, Brazil, Saudi Arabia, Mexico, South Korea, South Africa, and Ukraine.
Canada formally extended an invitation to India last month when Foreign Minister Anita Anand visited New Delhi and met with Jaishankar. During their discussions, both leaders emphasized their shared goal of restoring confidence and enhancing cooperation across key areas of engagement.
This visit also follows the July meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney, which helped lay the groundwork for resetting bilateral relations that had experienced significant strain during 2023-24.
