Andrew Cuomo is competing as an Independent candidate in the New York City mayoral race after his defeat in the Democratic primary to Zohran Mamdani earlier this year.
Former New York governor Andrew Cuomo has received an endorsement from US President Donald Trump as the New York City mayoral election approaches its final phase.
Trump utilized his Truth Social platform to encourage New Yorkers to support Cuomo, aiming to prevent Democratic socialist frontrunner Zohran Mamdani from winning the election.
Following his June loss in the Democratic primary to Mamdani, Cuomo decided to continue his campaign as an Independent candidate.
Current polling data indicates Mamdani maintains a slight advantage over Cuomo, while Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa remains significantly behind. Trump chose not to extend his endorsement to Sliwa.
Andrew Mark Cuomo was born December 6, 1957, in New York City, the son of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo and Matilda Raffa Cuomo. Raised in Queens, he completed his education at Fordham University in 1979 before attending Albany Law School, graduating in 1982. After completing his studies, Cuomo managed his father's successful gubernatorial campaign and subsequently served as a senior adviser in the state administration. His early career also included positions as an assistant district attorney in Manhattan and partnership at the law firm Blutrich, Falcone & Miller.
In 1986, Cuomo established Housing Enterprise for the Less Privileged (HELP), an organization dedicated to providing transitional housing solutions for homeless families. He later chaired the New York City Commission on the Homeless in 1991. Cuomo joined the US Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) as Assistant Secretary for Community Planning and Development in 1993. His federal service continued when President Bill Clinton appointed him HUD Secretary in 1997, a position he maintained until 2001.
Cuomo won election as New York State Attorney General in 2006, serving from 2007 to 2010. During his tenure, he focused on prosecuting public corruption cases and addressing financial misconduct during the 2008 economic crisis.
In 2010, Cuomo was elected Governor of New York, ultimately serving three terms from 2011 to 2021. His administration oversaw several major infrastructure initiatives, including construction of the Mario M Cuomo Bridge, renovations at LaGuardia and JFK airports, development of Moynihan Train Hall, and expansion of the Second Avenue Subway.
Cuomo resigned from the governorship in 2021 following a state investigation that concluded he had sexually harassed multiple women. Lieutenant Governor Kathy Hochul assumed the role of governor upon his departure.
On a personal note, Cuomo married Kerry Kennedy in 1990. The couple had three daughters before divorcing in 2005. He later engaged in a long-term relationship with television personality Sandra Lee.
