Following the indefinite suspension of Jimmy Kimmel's late-night talk show, US President Donald Trump expressed his satisfaction while expanding his criticism to include other late-night television personalities.
Jimmy Kimmel's show was pulled off air on Wednesday after the US government threatened to revoke broadcasting licenses due to comments the host made regarding conservative influencer Charlie Kirk's death.
On his Truth Social platform, Trump celebrated Kimmel's show cancellation as "great news for America" and claimed that Kimmel possessed "zero talent."
Trump's criticism extended beyond Kimmel to other late-night comedians including Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Stephen Colbert, who have consistently criticized his presidency. In his Truth Social post, Trump specifically labeled two of these TV hosts as "total losers."
The President further commented, "Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that's possible," adding, "That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC."
This follows Trump's August statement calling Stephen Colbert 'talentless' after CBS announced in July it would end The Late Show with Stephen Colbert after its 10-year run.
These remarks highlight Trump's continuing feud with late-night television, a medium that has frequently mocked and criticized his actions and policies.
Background on Jimmy Fallon, Seth Meyers, and Their Recent Trump Commentary
Seth Meyers, born December 28, 1973, is an American comedian, writer, actor, and television host who currently hosts Late Night with Seth Meyers on NBC. He previously served as head writer and cast member on Saturday Night Live, hosting the "Weekend Update" segment. His work includes shows like Documentary Now! and The Awesomes, and he hosted the 66th Primetime Emmy Awards.
During his September 16 show, Meyers criticized President Trump's foreign policy approach, comparing it to teenage peer pressure. He joked that Trump's conditional stance on Russian sanctions resembled saying, "I'll do it first if you do it first," and mocked his writing style as similar to "a scammer sending you a fake job listing."
Meyers' comments followed Trump's Truth Social announcement that he would impose sanctions against Russia for flying drones into Poland's airspace, but only after all NATO nations agreed to stop purchasing Russian oil. Trump wrote, "I am ready to do major Sanctions on Russia when all NATO Nations have agreed, and started, to do the same thing, and when all NATO Nations STOP BUYING OIL FROM RUSSIA."
Jimmy Fallon was born September 19, 1974, in Brooklyn, New York, with Irish, German, and Norwegian heritage. He has performed stand-up comedy, impressions, and character work at major venues including the Improv in Los Angeles and Caroline's Comedy Club in New York City. Fallon also studied acting with The Groundlings comedy group before joining Saturday Night Live as a featured performer in September 1998.
On September 17, Fallon made light of Trump's UK visit, joking that the president appreciates Britain because "when he holds a little tea sandwich, his hands look normal-sized."
He also quipped about Trump's relationship with King Charles, saying, "Over the years, Trump and Charles have actually bonded because they both know what it's like to inherit everything they have. Besides that, they also know what it's like to spend all day on the throne."
Regarding First Lady Melania Trump, Fallon remarked, "Meanwhile, Melania is joining Trump on his visit. When Melania goes to Buckingham Palace, the guards try to make her smile."
