New Delhi:
ABC Network has indefinitely suspended its popular program "Jimmy Kimmel Live" following controversial remarks by host Jimmy Kimmel regarding the assassination of right-wing activist Charlie Kirk and criticism of President Donald Trump and FBI Director Kash Patel's investigation handling. President Trump celebrated the show's cancellation, calling it "great news for America." But what exactly prompted this dramatic action?
Charlie Kirk, a close associate of President Trump and the co-founder and CEO of youth organization Turning Point USA, was fatally shot on September 10 during a speaking engagement at Utah Valley University when a bullet struck his neck. President Trump announced Kirk's death on social media, describing him as "Great, and even Legendary."
Charlie Kirk was a trusted advisor to US President Donald Trump.
During Monday's monologue on his late-night program, Kimmel addressed the shooting incident.
"We hit some new lows over the weekend with the MAGA gang desperately trying to characterise this kid (Tyler Robinson) who murdered Charlie Kirk as anything other than one of them and with everything they can to score political points from it," Kimmel stated.
Kimmel also scrutinized President Trump's grieving process for his friend Charlie.
"In between the finger-pointing, there was grieving. On Friday, the White House flew the flags at half-staff, which got some criticism. But on a human level, you can see how hard the president is taking this," remarked Kimmel before playing footage of President Trump answering reporters' questions about coping with Kirk's death.
In the clip, President Trump responded: "I think very good. And by the way, right there, you see all the trucks? They just started construction of the new ballroom for the White House, which is something they've been trying to get, as you know, for about 150 years, and it is going to be a beauty."
Ridiculing President Trump's response, Kimmel commented, "Yes, he's at the fourth stage of grief. Construction. Demolition. Construction. This is not how an adult grieves the murder of someone he called a friend. This is how a four-year-old mourns a goldfish, okay? And it didn't just happen once."
Kimmel then showed another clip of Trump discussing Kirk's death during a Fox News appearance while again mentioning building a ballroom. Trump mentioned he was in the "midst of building a great..." when he learned about Kirk's assassination.
"There's something wrong with him," Kimmel remarked.
The talk show host also questioned the purpose of constructing a $200 million White House ballroom. "Is it possible that he's doing it intentionally so we could be bad about that instead of the Epstein list?" Kimmel joked.
Kimmel then criticized FBI Director Kash Patel, suggesting he handled the Charlie Kirk murder investigation "like a kid who didn't read the book BS-ing his way through an oral report."
Shortly after Kirk's assassination, Patel announced on X (formerly Twitter) that "the subject" in the killing was in custody. However, the two detained individuals were soon released.
"Kash Patel always looks like he just got hit by a Volkswagen," Kimmel added.
Nexstar Distances Itself From Jimmy Kimmel Live
ABC's decision to suspend the show followed Nexstar – one of America's largest ABC affiliate station owners – announcing it would not broadcast "Jimmy Kimmel Live" for "the foreseeable future."
Nexstar broadcasting president Andrew Alford stated the company "strongly objects" to Kimmel's comments. "Mr. Kimmel's comments about the death of Mr Kirk are offensive and insensitive at a critical time in our national political discourse, and we do not believe they reflect the spectrum of opinions, views, or values of the local communities in which we are located," he explained.
"Continuing to give Mr Kimmel a broadcast platform in the communities we serve is simply not in the public interest at the current time, and we have made the difficult decision to preempt his show in an effort to let cooler heads prevail as we move toward the resumption of respectful, constructive dialogue."
Trump Celebrates Kimmel's Show Suspension
President Trump applauded the cancellation of Jimmy Kimmel's program and congratulated ABC for "finally having courage" to take such action.
"Great News for America: The ratings challenged Jimmy Kimmel Show is CANCELLED," President Trump posted on his Truth Social platform.
"Kimmel has ZERO talent, and worse ratings than even Colbert, if that's possible. That leaves Jimmy and Seth, two total losers, on Fake News NBC. Their ratings are also horrible. Do it NBC!!!" the President added.
In July, CBS announced the cancellation of 'The Late Show with Stephen Colbert.' President Trump expressed that he "absolutely love that Colbert got fired."
"His talent was even less than his ratings," the President commented.
"I hear Jimmy Kimmel is next. Has even less talent than Colbert! Greg Gutfeld is better than all of them combined, including the Moron on NBC who ruined the once great Tonight Show," he added, commending the Fox News Late Night host.
Charlie Kirk Assassination Details
Charlie Kirk, 31, was assassinated during an event at Utah Valley University on September 10. The shooter escaped immediately after firing a single bullet that pierced the conservative activist's neck.
President Trump announced Kirk's death on social media, praising the co-founder and CEO of Turning Point USA as "Great, and even Legendary."
Tyler Robinson, 22, has been arrested for Kirk's murder. According to investigators, Robinson blended into the campus crowd due to his college-age appearance. Utah Governor Spencer J Cox stated the suspect had become "more political" and opposed Kirk's beliefs.
Tyler Robinson is charged with killing Charlie Kirk.
According to court documents, Robinson confessed to the crime in text messages to his transgender partner following the shooting. When asked why he committed the act, Robinson replied, "I had enough of his hatred. Some hate can't be negotiated out." He admitted to planning the attack for "a bit over a week."
