Tourists visiting Rovaniemi, known globally as Santa Claus's "official hometown" in Finland, are encountering an unexpected reality this winter season.
Beyond the festive charm and holiday attractions, the Finnish Lapland city now hosts a significant NATO military presence, reflecting growing security concerns about neighboring Russia.
Visitors have expressed surprise at the juxtaposition of Christmas magic and military activity. Scottish tourist Donna Coyle reported hearing military jets overhead during what was supposed to be a peaceful reindeer safari. "We didn't know anything about it," she remarked to The Guardian.
German visitor Hannah Schlicker from Stuttgart noted the stark contrast: "This morning we took a reindeer tour and we just saw military planes going around. We felt the presence of reality being here. You cannot hide from it."
Adding to the surreal atmosphere is the revelation that Santa Park, Rovaniemi's popular underground Christmas attraction, serves a dual purpose as a bomb shelter for local residents.
"It's actually scary to think about it, how close we actually are [to Russia]. But at the same time the Santa Park is a bunker... maybe it helps a little bit," Hannah added.
The military presence has intensified recently, with thousands of NATO soldiers passing through Rovaniemi's airbase on their way to Rovajarvi, western Europe's largest military training ground, located approximately 90 km from the Russian border.
Rovaniemi is also being established as a hub for Finland's new Forward Land Forces (FLF), a Swedish-led NATO battlegroup, underscoring the strategic importance of the region.
These military exercises come amid increasing tensions, with Russia warning about its enhanced military posture near Finland and demonstrating readiness for potential confrontation if provoked.
Finnish intelligence officials have cautioned that Russia may redeploy forces to its northern border once the conflict in Ukraine diminishes in intensity.
At the Rovajarvi training grounds, multinational forces from Finland, Sweden, the United Kingdom, and Poland have been conducting extensive drills. The recent Lapland Steel 25 exercise brought together various military assets including rifle units, tanks, helicopters, and specially trained Arctic soldiers navigating through deep snow.
Though Lapland houses only 3 percent of Finland's population, it accounts for more than a quarter of the country's 1,450 km border with Russia. The region shares a boundary with the Kola Peninsula, which contains Russia's largest concentration of nuclear weapons.
Most recently, military officers from Sweden, Finland, and Norway convened in Rovaniemi to finalize strategic plans for the Forward Land Forces initiative, highlighting the ongoing militarization of this once purely festive destination.
