"India's Time To Flex Diplomatic Muscle": US Lawmaker Amid Trade Talks

With ministerial-level talks between India and the United States set to begin in Washington, US Democratic lawmaker Ami Bera advised New Delhi to "flex its diplomatic muscle" and play Russia-Ukraine peace negotiator to seal the trade deal with US.

US Democratic lawmaker Ami Bera has urged India to leverage its diplomatic influence and potentially mediate in the Russia-Ukraine conflict as a way to strengthen its position during ongoing trade negotiations with the United States.

Speaking to NDTV in New Delhi, Bera emphasized that the 50 percent tariffs imposed by US President Donald Trump on Indian imports are detrimental to both nations, steering the India-US relationship in an unfavorable direction.

"The United States represents a significant export market for Indian products, and these tariffs will impact Indian workers. However, they won't benefit American consumers either, as we're witnessing rising inflation and prices in the US. No one gains from a trade war," Bera stated.

He mentioned that a high-level Indian delegation, including Commerce Minister Piyush Goyal and Foreign Minister S Jaishankar, will be in New York this week to advance India-US trade discussions.

"I hope they meet with US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and other trade representatives to reach a more favorable position where both nations can see potential benefits," Bera remarked.

The Democratic congressman noted that he has observed "willingness on both sides" to conclude a trade agreement and highlighted that Washington views New Delhi as "a genuine opportunity as we consider relocating supply chains away from China."

"This presents an opportunity for India to demonstrate its diplomatic strength. President Trump genuinely desires an end to the Ukraine conflict, which has been difficult to achieve," Bera explained.

"India maintains different communication channels with Moscow and has a long-standing relationship with Russia, which will likely continue after the conflict ends. I believe this is the moment for Indian diplomats to take initiative, approach President Trump, and offer assistance in finding a resolution."

In recent months, relations between New Delhi and Washington have become strained, primarily due to the Trump administration's decision to impose 50 percent tariffs on Indian goods, including 25 percent penalties related to India's purchase of Russian oil.

President Trump has repeatedly claimed to have mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, an assertion that India refutes. The Trump administration has also targeted Indian immigrants in the US as part of its latest immigration crackdown. Additionally, the forthcoming sanctions against those involved in Iran's Chabahar port project have dealt another blow to India, which has made substantial investments in this strategically important port.
