The White House faced backlash after using a segment of Sabrina Carpenter's song "Juno" in a video depicting ICE agents conducting immigration enforcement operations.
Pop sensation Sabrina Carpenter publicly rebuked the White House for unauthorized use of her music in footage showing Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers detaining individuals on city streets.
The controversial video, shared on the official White House X account, featured ICE personnel pursuing and restraining people while looping Carpenter's lyric "have you ever tried this one" from her hit song 'Juno.' The post was captioned "Have you ever tried this one? Bye-bye," accompanied by waving and heart-eyes emojis.
Carpenter responded forcefully on social media, describing the video as "evil and disgusting" and demanding, "Do not ever involve me or my music to benefit your inhumane agenda."
White House spokesperson Abigail Jackson delivered a sharp retort to Fox News, stating: "Here's a Short n' Sweet message for Sabrina Carpenter: we won't apologise for deporting dangerous criminal illegal murderers, rapists, and pedophiles from our country. Anyone who would defend these sick monsters must be stupid, or is it slow?" The statement deliberately referenced Carpenter's album "Short n' Sweet" and her song 'Manchild.'
This incident follows a similar controversy involving Olivia Rodrigo just one month earlier. Rodrigo objected to the use of her song 'all-american b*tch' in another deportation-themed video shared on White House and Department of Homeland Security Instagram accounts.
The Rodrigo-featuring video began with the warning "IF ICE FINDS YOU," followed by footage of immigrants apparently preparing for self-deportation, concluding with text urging viewers to "LEAVE NOW and self-deport using the CBP Home app. If you don't, you will face the consequences."
Rodrigo publicly stated, "Don't ever use my songs to promote your racist, hateful propaganda." Though her comment was later removed, screenshots circulated widely, and Instagram eventually removed the audio from the video.
A DHS spokesperson responded to The Guardian: "America is grateful all the time for our federal law enforcement officers who keep us safe. We suggest Ms Rodrigo thank them for their service, not belittle their sacrifice."
Carpenter and Rodrigo join an expanding list of prominent musicians who have protested the Trump administration's unauthorized use of their music, including Beyonce, the Rolling Stones, and Jess Glynne, all of whom have publicly objected to their work being associated with Trump's political messaging.
