Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has called for an immediate parliamentary debate on Delhi's worsening air pollution, which has remained at 'very poor' levels for over two weeks. Meeting with concerned mothers, Gandhi questioned PM Modi's silence on what he terms a "health emergency" affecting children's health nationwide and demanded an enforceable action plan to address the crisis as doctors warn about increasing pollution-related health risks.

Rahul Gandhi Calls Air Pollution "Health Emergency", Questions PM Modi

Congress leader Rahul Gandhi has demanded a comprehensive parliamentary discussion regarding the severe air pollution crisis in New Delhi, openly questioning Prime Minister Narendra Modi's silence on what he describes as a "health emergency."

On Friday, Gandhi called for a strict, enforceable action plan to address the worsening air pollution situation. He expressed concern about the Modi government's apparent lack of urgency and accountability regarding this critical environmental issue.

Gandhi met with several mothers at his residence to discuss their concerns and later shared a video of these conversations on social media. He emphasized the emotional toll the pollution is taking on families.

"Each mother I speak with shares the same concern: her child is developing in an environment of toxic air. They are feeling overwhelmed, fearful, and frustrated," Gandhi stated in his social media post.

Addressing the Prime Minister directly, he continued, "Modi ji, India's children are suffocating before our eyes. How can you remain silent? Why does your administration demonstrate no sense of urgency, present no comprehensive plan, and take no responsibility?"

The Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha further asserted that "India requires an immediate, thorough Parliament debate regarding air pollution and a rigorous, enforceable action plan to address this health emergency."

Gandhi emphasized, "Our children deserve to breathe clean air - not excuses and diversionary tactics."

New Delhi has been experiencing very poor air quality for over two weeks. According to forecasts from the Air Quality Early Warning System for Delhi, the air quality is expected to remain in the 'very poor' category throughout the coming week.

As Delhi's air quality deteriorates into 'very poor' and 'severe' categories this winter season, medical professionals are emphasizing the importance of regular diagnostic screenings to identify early indicators of health deterioration related to pollution, particularly among vulnerable groups such as smokers, asthma patients, children, and individuals with pre-existing cardiac or respiratory conditions.

Health experts have noted that preventive health examinations are becoming increasingly crucial as the toxic air causes airway inflammation, diminishes lung function, and exacerbates existing health conditions.
