New Delhi:
According to the Income Tax Department's announcement on Monday, over 7 crore I-T returns have been submitted as the filing deadline approaches, while many users report technical difficulties with the portal and request deadline extensions.
Heavy traffic has been observed on the e-filing platform as the Monday submission deadline draws near.
Despite numerous requests, the department has not suggested any intention to extend the deadline for income tax return (ITR) submissions by individuals, HUFs, and those not required to have their accounts audited for the financial year 2024-25 (Assessment Year 2025-26).
"More than 7 crore ITRs have been filed so far and still counting (15th September)," the department posted on X, encouraging those who haven't yet filed their ITR for AY 2025-26 to do so promptly.
The final date to submit ITRs without incurring penalties is September 15 for income earned during the 2024-25 fiscal year. In the previous year, 7.28 crore ITRs were submitted by the July 31 deadline.
Over recent days, numerous chartered accountants and individual taxpayers have taken to social media platforms reporting issues with the I-T portal, particularly when attempting to make tax payments or download Annual Information Statements (AIS).
On Monday, several users complained about being unable to access the e-filing portal at all.
In a late X post on September 14, the department labeled as "fake" any statements regarding deadline extensions, advising taxpayers to rely solely on official communications from @IncomeTaxIndia.
"The due date for filing ITRs remains 15.09.2025," the post confirmed.
In response to complaints about difficulties uploading ITRs and making tax payments, the department stated earlier today, "The e-filing portal is working fine. Please clear your browser cache or try accessing the portal through a different browser". They also requested users experiencing problems to share their details (including PAN and mobile number) by emailing orm@cpc.incometax.gov.in.
On September 14, the I-T department responded to users reporting problems downloading AIS/TIS with: "The AIS/TIS facility is functioning without any issues. May we request you to please try accessing it again. In case you continue to face difficulties, please share your details (along with your mobile number & public IP address) with us at cmcpc_support@insight.gov.in." In May, the department had announced an extension of the filing deadline for ITRs for Assessment Year (AY) 2025-26 (covering income earned in financial year 2024-25) for individuals, HUFs, and entities not requiring audited accounts from July 31 to September 15.
This extension was granted due to "structural and content revisions" in income tax return (ITR) forms, which were officially notified in late April and early May. These modifications to ITR forms for AY 2025-26 necessitated corresponding updates to ITR filing utilities and back-end systems.
ITR filing statistics have demonstrated steady growth over recent years, indicating increased compliance and an expanding tax base. For AY 2024-25, a record 7.28 crore ITRs were submitted by July 31, 2024, compared to 6.77 crore for AY 2023-24, showing a year-on-year growth of 7.5 per cent.
