Why Take Victim To Hospital 19 km Away? What BMW Crash Accused Told Cops
New Delhi:
Gaganpreet Kaur, the primary suspect in the deadly Delhi BMW collision that killed Finance Ministry senior official Navjot Singh and severely injured his wife, has claimed she has "no idea" how the devastating accident occurred.
In her statement to authorities, Ms. Kaur explained she transported the victims to a hospital in GTB Nagar - located 19km from the accident site - because she had previously received COVID treatment there. She stated that in the chaotic aftermath, with her husband and daughter also suffering injuries in the vehicle, it was the only medical facility she could recall.
Ms. Kaur, who also sought treatment at the same hospital, faces charges including rash driving, culpable homicide, and evidence tampering. She has been remanded to two days' judicial custody. The evidence tampering accusation emerged after investigators discovered Ms. Kaur's father is co-owner of the hospital, raising questions about potential cover-up attempts or destruction of biological evidence. Hospital officials maintained proper protocols were followed but declined to confirm Ms. Kaur's connection to ownership.
Police officials stated Ms. Kaur will appear before a judge following a medical examination, and authorities await toxicology results to determine her blood alcohol content.
"Regarding the evidence tampering allegations from the victim's family, she should have notified police and taken the victims to the nearest medical facility," stated Additional DCP (South West Delhi) Abhimanyu Prasad, who also confirmed Mr. Singh's wife is currently stable.
"Surveillance footage will be examined to verify speeding allegations. During interrogation, she claimed no knowledge of how the accident happened. She stated they (herself, husband, and child) were traveling toward Gurugram when the collision occurred after a sudden impact..."
Delhi Police sources previously informed NDTV that the BMW struck a road divider before colliding with the motorcycle.
Post-accident footage shows Ms. Kaur being extracted from beneath the wrecked BMW, with the motorcycle visible beside the SUV, along with Mr. Singh's body.
Following the crash, Ms. Kaur and her husband, Parikshit Makkad, assisted by a witness named Gulfam, helped place the victims into a taxi to seek medical attention. However, rather than directing the vehicle to a nearby hospital, they transported the couple to GTB Nagar.
Navjot Singh arrived too late for life-saving treatment. His wife remains hospitalized. Mr. Singh's son, Navnoor, told NDTV his father might have survived had he received prompt medical care at a local facility.
"They had visited the Bangla Sahib Gurdwara... It's incomprehensible why they were taken to such a distant hospital. Time is crucial after an accident," he remarked.
Ms. Kaur and Mr. Makkad own a manufacturing facility in Gurugram's Sector 37. According to sources, the factory produces non-leather apparel and horse harnesses, with annual revenue exceeding Rs 50 crore.
