The two perpetrators, Toofani (35) and Rajesh (29), were apprehended within an hour after committing the crime.
In Madhya Pradesh's Guna district, a political disagreement regarding Bihar Assembly election results escalated into a horrific murder. A 22-year-old laborer from Bihar was allegedly killed by his maternal uncles following an alcohol-fueled late-night argument filled with political animosity.
The tragic incident occurred late Sunday night at a government quarters construction site in Guna's Cantonment police station area. The victim, Shankar Manjhi, and the accused, Toofani and Rajesh, both worked and lived at the site alongside other laborers. All three individuals originated from Bihar's Sheohar district and had recently arrived in Guna seeking employment.
According to police reports, the three men prepared dinner together and engaged in drinking at the construction site. As alcohol consumption increased, their conversation shifted toward the Bihar Assembly election results. Shankar, a devoted supporter of the Rashtriya Janata Dal (RJD), reportedly entered into a heated dispute with his uncles, who were vocal advocates for the Janata Dal (United) (JD-U).
What initially began as intoxicated banter rapidly evolved into an intense political confrontation. Investigators indicate that the situation turned violent when the accused allegedly made disparaging remarks about former Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav. Infuriated, Shankar responded with strong verbal abuse, triggering an outburst of anger.
The argument quickly intensified into a savage assault. Police state that both uncles attacked the young man, beating him brutally before dragging him toward a muddy pit near the under-construction quarters. In a horrifying act, they allegedly forced his face into the mud and held him down until he suffocated. Shankar died immediately as mud filled his mouth and lungs, causing asphyxiation. After committing the murder, the duo attempted to escape, abandoning their nephew's body partially buried in the sludge.
The murder was discovered when authorities received information about an unidentified body near the construction site. "We received information regarding an unidentified body near the under-construction residential quarters. The police team immediately proceeded to the location and recovered the body. Subsequent investigations led to the apprehension of the accused duo within just one hour," stated Guna district superintendent of police Ankit Soni.
Based on interrogation of the arrested individuals, police confirmed the motive. "Ongoing investigation based on questioning of the arrested duo has revealed that a verbal dispute concerning the recent assembly election results in Bihar turned violent, resulting in murder," SP Soni added.
Both accused, identified as Toofani (35) and Rajesh (29), were arrested within an hour of the crime and have allegedly confessed during questioning, admitting that political rivalry, alcohol, and rage drove them to kill their own nephew.
The case has shocked the local community, highlighting how deeply embedded political passions, even hundreds of kilometers away from Bihar, can erupt into deadly violence. Police confirm that further investigation continues.
