Modasa (Gujarat):

Four individuals, including a one-day-old newborn, a doctor, and two others, perished in a tragic incident when their ambulance burst into flames near Modasa town in Gujarat's Arvalli district early Tuesday morning, according to police reports.

The fire erupted around 1 am on the Modasa-Dhansura road as the infant, who had been experiencing health complications after birth, was being transported from a Modasa-based hospital to a private medical facility in Ahmedabad for specialized treatment, police inspector DB Vala explained.

The victims were identified as the newborn boy, his father Jignesh Mochi (38), Dr. Shantilal Rentia (30) from Ahmedabad, and nurse Bhuriben Manat (23), a native of Arvalli.

Three additional passengers — two relatives of Mochi and the ambulance driver — sustained burn injuries and were immediately taken to a nearby hospital for treatment, the official stated.

"Jignesh Mochi originated from neighboring Mahisagar district, and his newborn child was receiving medical care at a private hospital in Modasa following birth. The ambulance caught fire due to unknown causes while they were en route to another medical facility," Vala reported.

Police-released CCTV footage shows the ambulance decelerating near a petrol pump after the driver became aware of flames emerging from the rear section of the vehicle.

"While the driver and two of Mochi's relatives who occupied the front seats managed to escape with injuries, the infant, his father, the doctor, and the nurse positioned in the back of the vehicle were tragically consumed by the flames," Vala explained.

Despite the local fire brigade's prompt response after being alerted, they were unable to save the four victims.

The injured survivors have been identified as driver Ankit Thakor and Jignesh Mochi's relatives — Gaurang Mochi and Gitaben Mochi.

District Superintendent of Police Manoharsinh Jadeja confirmed that forensic experts have been called to investigate the incident and determine the factors that led to this tragedy.
