A tragic incident claimed the lives of at least 42 Indian nationals when a bus transporting Umrah pilgrims collided with a diesel tanker near Medina in Saudi Arabia on Monday night. The collision resulted in a massive fire that engulfed the bus completely, as shown in footage from the scene where no other vehicles are visible.

Emergency response teams including fire brigades, rescue personnel, and law enforcement were quickly dispatched to the location.

The accident occurred at approximately 1:30 am (IST) in an area identified as Mufrihat. The pilgrims were returning from their religious rituals in Mecca and were traveling toward Medina. According to local media reports, most passengers were asleep when the fire erupted, leaving them with minimal opportunity to escape the burning vehicle.

Reports indicate that the majority of passengers originated from Hyderabad in Telangana state.

Only one survivor has been identified thus far - Mohd Abdul Shoiab - though his current medical condition remains unknown.

Rescue teams and firefighters are actively working to control the blaze and identify the victims.

The Consulate General of India in Jeddah has established a 24-hour control room with the number 8002440003. Additional control room numbers have been provided by the government (+91 7997959754 and +91 9912919545) to assist the families of those affected by the tragedy.

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar expressed his condolences and pledged complete support to the victims' families, stating: "Deeply shocked at the accident involving Indian nationals in Medina, Saudi Arabia. Our Embassy in Riyadh and Consulate in Jeddah are giving the fullest support to Indian nationals and families affected by this accident. Sincere condolences to the bereaved families. Pray for the speedy recovery of those injured," in a message posted on X.

The government of Telangana, led by Chief Minister Revanth Reddy, confirmed they are in communication with the Indian Embassy in Riyadh regarding the incident.

Hyderabad MP Asaduddin Owaisi reported that he has been in contact with Abu Mathen George, Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Riyadh, who assured him they were gathering information about the accident. "I have contacted two Hyderabad-based travel agencies and shared the passengers' details with the Riyadh Embassy and the Foreign Secretary. I request the Union Government, especially EAM Dr S Jaishankar, to bring the bodies back to India and, if anyone is injured, ensure that they receive proper medical treatment," stated Owaisi, who represents Hyderabad in the Lok Sabha.
