Hyderabad:
The Jubilee Hills Assembly by-poll counting commences Friday morning, coinciding with the Bihar election count. This electoral contest represents a significant political barometer for the Congress, a potential revival opportunity for the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), and a chance for the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) to establish stronger foundations in Telangana.
Vote counting will begin at 8 am at Hyderabad's Kotla Vijayabhaskar Reddy Indoor Stadium in Yousuguda. The process starts with 101 postal ballots before proceeding to electronic voting machine (EVM) tabulation. District Election Officer RV Kannan, who also serves as Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation Commissioner, confirmed all necessary arrangements have been completed.
The stadium houses forty-two counting tables with special Election Commission authorization, with results expected to be finalized within 10 rounds of counting.
On November 11, over 1.94 lakh votes were cast, representing a 48.49 percent voter turnout. The contest features 59 candidates in total.
General Observers and Election Commission teams will monitor the entire counting process, with live updates available on the EC application to ensure complete transparency.
Joint Police Commissioner Tafseer Iqbal confirmed comprehensive security measures, including special teams deployed from all divisions and enforcement of Section 144 prohibiting gatherings of 20 or more individuals around the stadium.
The electoral contest primarily features three major contenders: Congress has fielded Naveen Yadav, who enjoys support from Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM; BJP has nominated Lankala Deepak Reddy; and BRS has put forward Maganti Sunitha, wife of the late sitting MLA Maganthi Gopinath who represented the constituency since 2014, initially for Telugu Desam Party before joining BRS.
The by-election was necessitated by Gopinath's passing in June.
A Congress victory would be interpreted as public reaffirmation of confidence in the party, strengthening its position in this traditionally challenging urban locality. Such an outcome could provide crucial momentum before upcoming civic and local elections.
Chief Minister Reddy previously told NDTV that the Jubilee Hills by-poll represents a litmus test for his administration, expressing confidence of winning by 7,000 to 15,000 votes.
However, defeat would significantly undermine the Congress' urban strategy and embolden critics both within the party and opposition ranks, potentially indicating dissatisfaction among influential urban voters.
For the BRS, victory would signal resurgence and validation, demonstrating resilience and ability to maintain strongholds in Hyderabad despite setbacks in the 2023 Assembly and 2024 Lok Sabha elections. Such a win would boost morale ahead of the 2028 Assembly election.
Conversely, a BRS defeat would deepen its post-electoral decline, complicating efforts to regain political relevance and consolidate its position as the primary opposition force.
For the BJP, a strong performance would reinforce its narrative as an emerging political force in Telangana, strengthen its urban base, and generate momentum for the 2028 elections.
