The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has introduced a new Aadhaar mobile application compatible with both iOS and Android platforms, providing residents with a secure and convenient method to carry their digital identification.
Currently in testing phase, this new Aadhaar app is available for download on the Google Play Store and Apple App Store. Users are encouraged to provide feedback before the final version is released.
According to UIDAI, "This app reimagines how residents engage with their identity, placing control, portability, and privacy directly in their hands." The authority added, "This application is intended for early adopters to explore and test. For any issues encountered or feedback, please contact us at feedback.app@uidai.net.in."
UIDAI has also promoted the app on their X (formerly Twitter) account, encouraging users to download the early-access version to experience paperless Aadhaar verification instantly.
While physical Aadhaar cards are issued to all holders by the government, the digital version significantly streamlines authentication processes and reduces reliance on physical documentation. The digital Aadhaar serves as valid identification for various services including admissions, banking, driving licenses, and passport applications.
The new Aadhaar app offers several noteworthy features. Users can share their Aadhaar ID digitally, eliminating the need for physical copies. The app facilitates sharing Aadhaar details via QR codes or verifiable credentials, with information shared in masked format to protect the full 12-digit number.
Another significant feature allows users to set up and manage up to five Aadhaar profiles on a single device, provided they are linked to the same registered mobile number. This is particularly useful for parents whose children's Aadhaar cards are registered under their contact number.
The app also supports biometric locking and unlocking. Once enabled, biometric data stored in the Aadhaar profile remains secure until temporarily unlocked or disabled by the system.
Using the new Aadhaar app is straightforward. After downloading from the Play Store or App Store, users select their preferred language and enter their 12-digit Aadhaar number. Authentication requires the registered mobile number to receive an OTP, followed by face-scan or biometric verification.
Users then add their Aadhaar profile and create a six-digit security PIN for protection. Once setup is complete, users can view their Aadhaar details, retrieve QR codes, share verifiable credentials, and manage biometric locking/unlocking features.
