DMK Faces Setback as Krishnagiri Municipal Chairperson Farida Nawab Ousted by Own Party Councilors

The confidence motion proceeded under stringent police protection

In a significant political setback for the governing DMK party, Krishnagiri Municipal Chairperson Farida Nawab has been removed from her position following a decisive defeat in a confidence vote, with the majority of support for her removal coming from fellow DMK councilors.

Within the 33-member municipal council, 24 out of 25 DMK councilors joined forces with representatives from Congress, an Independent member, and an AIADMK councilor to vote against her leadership. The internal uprising emerged from complaints regarding insufficient development initiatives, accusations that her husband was improperly intervening in municipal operations, and reports of mistreatment toward staff members.

The confidence vote was conducted with extensive security measures in place, with councilors transported by bus to the designated location. Municipal Commissioner Sathish informed NDTV that "four-fifths of the councilors have supported the no confidence motion. The government will promptly announce arrangements for a new election to select a replacement chairperson."

Claims circulated suggesting councilors had been sequestered at a mountain resort prior to the vote to prevent external pressure or influence. However, DMK councilor Balaji refuted these allegations, explaining, "We were simply collected from the town to enable group transportation on the bus. At no point were we taken to any hill resort."

Farida Nawab did not provide any response when contacted for comment regarding these developments.
