Woman, Minor Daughter Attempt Suicide In Bengal, Family Alleges SIR Fear

A tragic incident unfolded in West Bengal's Hooghly district where a 27-year-old woman and her minor daughter allegedly attempted suicide on Saturday, reportedly driven by fear after not receiving a Special Intensive Revision (SIR) enumeration form.

The distressing event occurred at the woman's residence in Dhaniakhali. Both mother and daughter are currently fighting for their lives in critical condition at the Intensive Care Unit of SSKM Hospital in Kolkata, according to police officials who have launched an investigation into the matter.

The father of the woman revealed that his daughter experienced severe distress after failing to receive the SIR form while other family members had received theirs. "She became terrified due to lack of documentation and feared deportation. This panic led her to consume poison together with her daughter," he explained after visiting them at the hospital in Kolkata.

Reports indicate that the woman had been residing at her parents' home in Dhaniakhali for approximately six years following marital difficulties. Family members noted she had been exhibiting signs of significant mental stress in recent days.

Asima Patra, the Trinamool Congress MLA from Dhaniakhali, pointed accusations at the BJP, claiming they were instilling fear among citizens through misleading statements regarding the National Register of Citizens (NRC) and detention facilities.

"When BJP leaders discuss sending people to detention camps, it creates widespread panic throughout Bengal. A similar incident happened in Dankuni recently," stated Patra, further asserting, "BJP is endangering people's lives."
