In Madhya Pradesh's Neemuch district, a tragic incident occurred when a police officer allegedly drove his SUV into multiple motorcycles, resulting in the death of a college teacher and severely injuring four others, including the teacher's 10-year-old son who subsequently lost both legs to amputation, authorities reported on Sunday.
Family members of the deceased have claimed that Assistant Sub-Inspector (ASI) Manoj Yadav, the accused officer, was intoxicated during the accident that took place Friday night.
Additional Superintendent of Police Naval Singh Sisodia confirmed to PTI via phone that Yadav has been suspended following the incident. The officer appeared in court Saturday where he was granted bail.
When questioned about allegations of the ASI's intoxication, Sisodia stated that medical reports are still pending. The officer is reportedly in his fifties.
Police sources indicate that the incident occurred near Bhadbhadia village on the Neemuch-Jawad road. Yadav was driving his personal Bolero vehicle when he allegedly collided with several two-wheelers.
Dasharath Singh, a 42-year-old college teacher, died at the scene of the accident. His son Harshit suffered severe injuries to both legs, necessitating amputation to save his life. Singh's wife Lalita, 35, and daughter Jaya, 6, also sustained injuries in the collision.
Bhupaal Singh, 44, another motorcyclist, was injured when the ASI's vehicle struck his bike. Several additional motorcycles were damaged in the incident, with multiple people receiving minor injuries, according to police reports.
Following the fatal accident, the victims' relatives held a protest, asserting that Yadav was driving under the influence of alcohol. They demanded strict punitive action against him and financial compensation for the teacher's bereaved family.
Cantonment City Superintendent of Police Kiran Chouhan confirmed that a case has been registered against Yadav for causing death due to rash and negligent driving.
