New Delhi:

On Sunday, a large number of individuals, including concerned parents and environmental activists, organized a demonstration at the India Gate to protest against the deteriorating air quality in the national capital.

The protestors, many being mothers with their children, expressed that they had assembled to urge immediate governmental action to ensure clean air for all residents.

"We are seeking meetings with our elected officials. We requested an appointment with the chief minister but were denied. Many parents are present because their children are suffering," stated environmentalist Bhavreen Khandari.

"One in three children already has compromised lung function; they will experience lifespans approximately 10 years shorter than those growing up in environments with cleaner air," she explained.

Another demonstrator, Abhishek, criticized the government for failing to provide citizens with the fundamental right to breathe unpolluted air.

"During former chief minister Sheila Dikshit's administration, Delhi was recognized as a green capital. Today, it is listed among the world's most polluted urban centers. Politicians continue to shift blame rather than accepting responsibility," he remarked.

Police officials stated that several protesters were detained for assembling without proper permission.

"There was no authorization granted for a protest at India Gate. To maintain public order and ensure security arrangements remained unhindered, some individuals were detained," a police officer explained.

DCP (New Delhi) Devesh Kumar Mahla clarified that the detentions were preventive measures.

"Only Jantar Mantar is designated as an official protest location where permission can be obtained by following proper procedures," he added.
