Tragic Murder at Funeral: Man Killed by Relative While Attending Nephew's Service in Uttarakhand

Police officials have confirmed the arrest of the primary suspect in the case.

A man who traveled to Haridwar district in Uttarakhand to attend his nephew's funeral met a tragic end when his relative allegedly murdered him by cutting his throat following a family disagreement, according to police statements released Friday.

Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Pramod Singh Doval of Haridwar announced that authorities have apprehended the main suspect, Naman, who resides in the West Amber Talab area of Roorkee.

The SSP explained that on Wednesday evening, a 25-year-old man named Kunal Pundir succumbed to burn injuries after a suspicious fire erupted in his room. The victim's maternal uncle, Sonu Chauhan, age 40, had journeyed from Saharanpur, Uttar Pradesh, to participate in his nephew's funeral services on Thursday.

During the funeral proceedings, a family dispute erupted, after which Naman, who is the younger brother of Chauhan's brother-in-law, allegedly slashed Chauhan's throat, causing immediate death.

Following the incident, Chauhan's sister submitted a formal complaint at the Ganganagar police station, prompting officials to register a murder case under section 103(1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).

Acting on confidential information, law enforcement officers captured Naman as he attempted to escape the area. Police recovered both the weapon used in the homicide and blood-stained clothing at the suspect's location, according to SSP Doval.

During questioning, Naman admitted that he and Chauhan had been engaged in a prolonged family dispute, and he committed the murder when the opportunity presented itself.

The SSP indicated that investigations are continuing, and if additional individuals are found to be involved in the murder, appropriate legal action will be taken against them.

Authorities are thoroughly investigating all aspects of the case, including the suspicious fire that claimed Kunal Pundir's life, to determine whether there might be any connection between the two fatalities.
