Police investigations have determined that the woman observed in the vehicle was engaged in an argument with her spouse.
What initially triggered a widespread police search operation in Coimbatore following concerns about a potential abduction has been confirmed as a misunderstanding. On Friday, police officials issued a statement clarifying that what was reported as a kidnapping was actually a "simple domestic argument" occurring between a husband and wife inside their moving vehicle.
The situation unfolded when a passerby reported hearing a woman's scream coming from inside a car in Coimbatore's Sulur district on Thursday evening. This report prompted an extensive overnight police search operation and comprehensive review of surveillance footage throughout the city. Early video evidence showed a vehicle briefly stopping on a residential street before departing shortly after a scream was heard, which led to initial concerns about a possible abduction incident.
Following their thorough investigation, however, police confirmed that the woman visible in the car was simply having a disagreement with her husband. Both individuals were subsequently located and interviewed by authorities. The woman has since provided a video statement confirming that no kidnapping took place.
"This was merely a family dispute. The woman was safe and at her residence. She has provided a statement explaining the actual circumstances," according to the official release from Coimbatore police. "We appreciate the public's vigilance in alerting authorities, but we encourage everyone to avoid sharing unconfirmed information that might create unnecessary panic," the statement continued.
Authorities also released a brief video recording of the woman, in which she explains that her scream was related to an argument and assured the public that she is "completely fine."
"We responded immediately based on the alert received and investigated every potential lead throughout the night," explained a senior police official. "Such community alertness helps ensure public safety, but it's equally important to verify facts before assuming worst-case scenarios."
The incident had caused particular concern as it occurred shortly after the abduction and sexual assault of a college student near Coimbatore International Airport, an event that had already heightened anxiety throughout the city.
