Chennai Bike Taxi Driver Arrested for Sexual Assault of 22-Year-Old Woman

A 22-year-old woman was sexually assaulted by a bike taxi driver named Sivakumar in Chennai. The incident occurred when the victim booked his service to meet a friend in Pakkikaranai. The driver has been arrested, produced before court, and remanded to judicial custody while opposition parties raise concerns about rising sexual crimes against women in Tamil Nadu.

Sivakumar was arrested by the police following an investigation.

A Chennai bike taxi driver was arrested for sexually assaulting a 22-year-old woman on Monday. The perpetrator, identified as Sivakumar, appeared before court and was remanded to judicial custody on Tuesday. Authorities have also confiscated his motorcycle.

Investigators revealed that the woman had booked a bike taxi late Monday to visit a friend in Chennai's Pakkikaranai. She requested Sivakumar, the assigned driver, to wait for her return journey.

However, while transporting her home Tuesday morning, Sivakumar allegedly diverted to an isolated route, threatened the victim, and sexually assaulted her. The driver subsequently dropped the woman at her residence, where she reported the incident to her husband.

Following the woman's complaint, police apprehended the accused after conducting an investigation.

"T 5 Vanagaram Police conducted an inquiry on the complaint and found it to be true. A case was registered, and the accused was identified as Sivakumar," stated the police report.

Opposition parties in Tamil Nadu have expressed growing concerns regarding the increase in sexual crimes against women. Meanwhile, state police and the governing DMK deny these allegations, asserting that strict measures are being implemented and recent cases are being expedited to ensure prompt justice.
