22-Year-Old Man Attempts Suicide in UP Police Custody by Slitting Throat with Blade

Officials have confirmed an investigation is currently in progress regarding the incident.
In Uttar Pradesh's Pratapgarh, a 22-year-old man reportedly attempted to take his own life by cutting his throat with a blade while in police custody, according to official statements.
The incident took place late Wednesday night at the Manikpur police station lockup, resulting in the immediate suspension of the Station House Officer (SHO), officials announced on Thursday.
The individual has been identified as Shivam Singh from Jamethi village in the Kunda area, who was being held for questioning, as stated by Additional Superintendent of Police (West) Brijnandan Rai.
"During the night between October 22-23, Shivam used a blade to inflict injuries to his throat while inside the lockup. He was promptly transported to a local medical facility before being transferred to AIIMS, Raebareli, due to the severity of his condition," explained Rai.
In response to the serious nature of the incident, Superintendent of Police Deepak Kumar Bhukar suspended Manikpur Station House Officer Deep Narayan effective immediately and initiated a departmental investigation.
Officials indicated that an inquiry is underway to ascertain the duration of the young man's detention and the circumstances surrounding the incident. Reports indicate he was in custody regarding allegations of motorcycle theft.
Law enforcement also noted that Shivam had previously served jail time on theft charges.
