Trinamool Congress Organizing Massive Protest Against Special Intensive Revision of Electoral Rolls in West Bengal

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is planning a major rally in Kolkata to protest the proposed Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls in West Bengal, with top leaders including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee set to participate. TMC officials have warned against voter harassment during the revision process, while BJP leaders defend the SIR as a standard electoral procedure ahead of the 2026 Assembly elections.

Trinamool To Launch Anti-SIR Campaign In West Bengal

Trinamool Congress leader Kunal Ghosh has issued a forceful warning against voter intimidation under the Special Intensive Revision initiative.

Kolkata:

The Trinamool Congress (TMC) is organizing a large-scale demonstration in Kolkata to protest the proposed Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls across West Bengal. TMC spokesperson Kunal Ghosh has verified that prominent party figures, including Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee and national general secretary Abhishek Banerjee, will attend this significant rally, scheduled tentatively for the second week of November.

During his media address on Wednesday, Ghosh delivered a stern caution against voter harassment under the SIR process, emphasizing that not a single eligible voter should be eliminated from the updated electoral list.

Ghosh announced that Trinamool will implement a comprehensive campaign strategy opposing what they characterize as the BJP's voter list manipulation tactics. He indicated that the complete protest schedule would be revealed by senior party leadership in the near future.

This represents a continuation of TMC's opposition to the proposed SIR exercise in West Bengal. Previously, Trinamool representative Rajib Banerjee had made explicit threats regarding the process, stating that the party would actively resist the SIR initiative in Bengal. He ominously warned that "blood will flow" if legitimate voters' names are removed during the revision process.

In response, BJP central leader Sukanta Majumdar has criticized the Bengal government for its stance against implementing SIR in the state. Describing the SIR process as a standard procedure conducted by the election commission, Majumdar suggested that if TMC has concerns about the SIR, they should address them through proper channels by approaching either the Election Commission or the Supreme Court.

The Election Commission is currently preparing the proposed Special Intensive Revision of electoral rolls in anticipation of the upcoming 2026 Assembly elections.

In September, an Election Commission delegation headed by Deputy Election Commissioner Gyanesh Bharti visited Bengal to evaluate preparedness and provide training to district election officers.
