The deceased 11-year-old Suranjana Singh was the niece of Sanjay Roy, who was recently convicted in the notorious RG Kar rape-murder case.

Kolkata:

Public anger erupted in Kolkata's Bhowanipore neighborhood on Tuesday when residents physically attacked the father and stepmother of an 11-year-old girl whose body was discovered partially hanging from a cupboard in their home the previous day.

The victim, Suranjana Singh, has been identified as the niece of Sanjay Roy, who was recently sentenced to life imprisonment for murdering an on-duty doctor in the high-profile RG Kar Medical College and Hospital case, according to police reports.

The couple, Bhola Singh and Pooja Singh, were allegedly attempting to escape their residence when neighbors confronted and assaulted them. Witnesses reported that the community's outrage stemmed from accusations that the couple had subjected the child to consistent physical and mental torture.

Bystanders described how locals dragged the stepmother by her hair and beat her, while simultaneously attacking the father with footwear during the confrontation.

Law enforcement personnel arrived at the scene and rescued the couple from the angry mob, escorting them to the nearby Alipore police station for their protection.

Investigators revealed that Bhola had previously been married to Babita, Sanjay Roy's elder sister, and Suranjana was their only child together.

After Babita died by suicide several years ago, Bhola married her younger sister, Pooja. The girl, who was a fifth-grade student, was discovered hanging from a hanger inside a wardrobe with clothing wrapped around her neck. She was found in this condition when her stepmother returned home. Despite being rushed to SSKM hospital, she was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Community members alleged that both parents regularly subjected the child to abuse, both physically and mentally.

"The little girl was frequently forced out of the house at night, sometimes as late as 2 am. This persistent mistreatment had severely traumatized her," claimed one neighbor.

The victim's grandmother further alleged that the parents would beat the child with belts and repeatedly slam her head against walls under various pretexts.

When speaking to the media, the devastated father stated, "I have no child left. There is no meaning to my life anymore."

The preliminary autopsy findings received by investigators have not yet allowed them to rule out foul play in the case.

"While initial investigation suggested suicide, we cannot dismiss the possibility of homicide," stated a senior officer, adding that authorities are awaiting detailed post-mortem and forensic reports to determine the exact cause of death.
