3 Soldiers Hurt After Terrorists Fire At Assam Base, Army Fires Back

New Delhi:

Three soldiers sustained injuries during an attack on an Army installation in eastern Assam's Tinsukia district just after midnight.

According to the Army, 'unidentified terrorists' launched an assault on Kakopathar Company from a vehicle in motion. Military personnel on duty responded promptly and effectively, while exercising caution to prevent collateral damage to nearby civilian residences.

The swift military response compelled the attackers to abandon their operation and retreat, the Army reported, adding that search operations have been initiated to locate and apprehend the perpetrators.

Sources informed NDTV that the attackers belonged to the outlawed terrorist organization ULFA (I), or the United Liberation Front of Asom (Independent), and employed grenade launchers alongside automatic firearms.

This Assam region previously featured prominently in news reports due to extensive terrorist activities, but has experienced a period of peace for several years now.

No ULFA (I) activity had been documented until recently.

Today's attack, according to sources, may represent retaliation for recent military operations in the Indo-Myanmar border area where several ULFA operatives were reportedly shot.

In related developments, on Thursday, an Assam Rifles Company Operating Base (CoB) in Arunachal Pradesh's Changlang district came under attack. Two military personnel were injured in this incident, attributed to militants from the NSCN-KY (A), a faction of the National Socialist Council of Nagaland.

Also on Thursday, another Assam Rifles installation near Manmao in Changlang district was attacked. Police sources indicated that a joint team of NSCN (K-YA) and ULFA (I) was responsible.

Two personnel were wounded in this incident.
