Students created a counterfeit letter using the institution's official letterhead format and distributed it through social media platforms
Traditionally, students would attempt to avoid examinations with simple excuses such as claiming illness or stomach pain. However, two Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA) students from Madhya Pradesh elevated this evasion tactic dramatically by falsely announcing their principal's death.
In an extraordinary and troubling case, two students enrolled at Government Holkar Science College in Indore manufactured a fraudulent death announcement regarding their principal, Dr. Anamika Jain. They circulated this notice across social media platforms in a desperate effort to delay their scheduled examinations. The counterfeit document, designed to resemble an official college letterhead, spread rapidly online, causing widespread alarm, confusion, and resulting in numerous condolence calls to the principal's residence.
Police investigations reveal that the two third-semester BCA students conspired together with the intention of postponing the Continuous Comprehensive Evaluation (CCE) examinations scheduled for October 15 and 16.
At approximately 10:15 pm on Tuesday, they distributed a message labeled "Important Information" stating that the college's online examinations and classes were being postponed "due to the sudden demise of Principal Dr. Anamika Jain."
By 10:30 pm, Dr. Jain received a concerned message from a student asking, "Ma'am, how are you? The message about your death is going viral?"
Astounded by this information, the principal responded, "I'm fine, how can this be?" Within minutes, her phone was inundated with calls, and several faculty members hurried to her home fearing the worst had occurred.
Dr. Jain promptly notified authorities and filed a formal complaint with the Bhanwarkuan police department. The subsequent investigation identified two students as suspects, whose mobile devices were seized. Reports indicate one suspect had deleted all WhatsApp data prior to being apprehended.
Bhanwarkuan Police Station Officer-in-Charge Rajkumar Yadav confirmed that a case has been registered under Section 336(4) of the Indian Penal Code for "intentionally fabricating a document with the intent to harm the reputation of a person." If found guilty, the students could potentially face up to three years imprisonment along with financial penalties.
"The accused fabricated the letter using the institute's official letterhead format and deliberately circulated it online to halt exams. Both are BCA students. Further investigation is underway," Yadav stated.
"During the investigation, the role of two students, Mayank Kachhwal and Himanshu Jaiswal, came to light. A case has been registered against them under relevant sections," said Rajesh Dandotiya, Additional DCP, Indore.
He further explained, "This incident appears to be an attempt to disrupt the educational atmosphere by spreading false rumors through social media. We are examining their mobile phones and social media accounts to uncover the full extent of their involvement."
A visibly emotional Dr. Jain expressed that the incident had profoundly affected both her and her family. "People actually came to my house to offer condolences, believing I had passed away. This was not a prank, it was a criminal act that caused emotional trauma. I have requested strict action so that such incidents never happen again."
Dr. Jain also suggested she had previously experienced harassment from certain students, noting, "Some individuals have been trying to create disruptions for a long time, making it difficult for me to perform my duties."
