Gwalior Top Cop Hina Khan, Who Shut Up Mob With 'Jai Shri Ram', Speaks To NDTV

Gwalior City SP Hina Khan has captured public attention after a video went viral showing her countering a mob by joining their 'Jai Shri Ram' chants.

Bhopal: In an exclusive interview with NDTV, Gwalior's City Superintendent of Police Hina Khan explained her viral moment when she confronted protesters with 'Jai Shri Ram' slogans, stating she was simply performing her duty as a police officer.

When questioned about her feelings when confronted by the mob who accused her of disrespecting Sanatan Dharma, Khan responded, "Not angry, but yes, I was saddened. We all live and work in this country and everyone has the right to express themselves. I was doing my duty. If taking God's name can bring calm, I think it's a good thing."

The situation in Gwalior has been tense due to a conflict between two lawyer groups regarding the installation of BR Ambedkar's statue at the Gwalior bench of Madhya Pradesh High Court. The administration has implemented prohibitory orders throughout the city. Despite these restrictions, a group of lawyers attempted to organize a Sundarkand Path - a recitation of a chapter from the Ramayana.

When Khan informed them that gatherings were prohibited, some lawyers accused her of being against Sanatan Dharma and began chanting 'Jai Shri Ram' to challenge her. They were visibly surprised when Khan joined in the chants, saying, "Anything else? If you raise Shri Ram slogans, I will too."

Explaining the incident, Khan said, "We were on duty outside the house of a senior lawyer. There was talk about putting up tents for Sundarkand. But as per the Collector's order, no event can be held without permission. I was explaining that. Once permission is granted, they can do it. I was just ensuring that everything happens lawfully."

Khan's journey reflects determination and focus. Born and raised in Guna district to a retired government teacher father and homemaker mother, she overcame modest beginnings through education and perseverance.

"After completing my schooling, I graduated in physiotherapy. Later, I worked in the GST department as an Assistant Commercial Tax Officer. But I wanted to serve the public more directly. That's why I started preparing for the civil services. In 2016, I cleared the Madhya Pradesh Public Service Commission exam," she explained.

Since joining the police force in 2018, Khan has served in Jabalpur before her current posting as City Superintendent of Police in Gwalior.

Khan credits her family as her source of strength. "I have a younger brother, two sisters, a sister-in-law, and a niece. It's a complete family," she shared with a smile.

Despite her demanding profession, Khan makes time for personal interests including music, reading, and watching quality entertainment. "I love reading. These days, I am very fond of watching web series. I enjoy series that have strong characters and good storytelling."

She admits to following the reality show Bigg Boss, particularly supporting Tanya Mittal from Gwalior. "She represents herself very well. I enjoy watching all such trailer-style series."

Music provides Khan with solace in her busy life. "I love old qawwalis and Lata Mangeshkar's songs. 'Lag Ja Gale Ki Phir Ye Haseen Raat Ho Na Ho,' songs like these stay with you. Many times, when I am on my way to work, I listen to music on my headphones."

Looking forward, Khan expresses interest in furthering her education and exploring writing. "I am also fond of writing. If I get a chance, I would love to write. For now, I am happy with my job and grateful for the support I have received from my seniors, my team, and the people."

In Gwalior's emotionally and politically charged environment, Hina Khan exemplifies quiet strength - enforcing laws firmly yet compassionately, handling criticism with composure, and finding personal balance through her love of music.
