Recent months have revealed a notable rekindling of personal warmth between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray.
Mumbai:
Shiv Sena (UBT) Rajya Sabha member Sanjay Raut has extended an open invitation to Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis through a letter, requesting his participation in an all-party delegation scheduled to meet Maharashtra's Chief Electoral Officer S Chokalingam on October 14.
While Raut characterized the meeting as a "formality," he emphasized the importance of maintaining dialogue with what he termed the "supreme institution in the democratic system."
The delegation, as outlined in the letter, includes prominent political figures such as Sharad Pawar, Uddhav Thackeray, Raj Thackeray, and Harshvardhan Sapkal. Following their meeting with the electoral officer, the group plans to hold a joint press conference at Yashwantrao Chavan Pratishthan.
In his communication, Raut stressed that Fadnavis's involvement would enhance public trust in the Election Commission.
"This meeting transcends political boundaries and represents an effort to reinforce citizens' confidence in the electoral machinery," Raut wrote, underscoring that unity among political parties is crucial for sustaining democratic principles.
This development emerges amid questions surrounding the cohesiveness and leadership of the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA). Following disappointing results in the 2024 assembly elections, internal divisions became apparent as the alliance's three constituent parties - Shiv Sena (UBT), NCP (Sharad Pawar), and Congress - began pursuing individual issue-based initiatives rather than maintaining a unified approach.
The upcoming meeting and subsequent press conference will mark the first occasion in several months where top MVA leaders appear together on a common platform, suggesting efforts to revitalize opposition coordination throughout Maharashtra.
Significantly, the letter includes MNS chief Raj Thackeray as part of the delegation. His inclusion introduces an unexpected element to opposition dynamics, particularly given the uncertainty regarding his party's potential alignment with the MVA.
While Uddhav Thackeray has publicly indicated willingness to collaborate with his cousin, other MVA partners, especially the Congress, have shown reluctance due to ideological disparities.
Since its establishment in 2006, Raj Thackeray's party has never formally entered an electoral alliance. His decision to provide unconditional support to the BJP-led Mahayuti during the 2024 Lok Sabha elections without fielding any candidates attracted criticism from various quarters.
Nevertheless, his recent coordination with UBT during protests against making Hindi a mandatory third language in Maharashtra appears to have diminished the division between the two Thackeray factions.
Beyond political considerations, the renewed personal connection between Raj and Uddhav Thackeray has become evident through several informal meetings in recent months.
The Congress maintains caution regarding potential MNS inclusion in the MVA coalition, concerned about ideological implications. However, Raj Thackeray's influence in urban areas and civic elections continues to make him a politically relevant figure, ensuring all parties remain attentive to evolving political equations.
The inclusion of his name in Sanjay Raut's letter alongside prominent opposition leaders indicates not only outreach to the chief minister but also a subtle revival of opposition unity, with potential new alliances forming ahead of critical local body elections.
