For two decades, Chhote Lal Mahato, a gas cylinder delivery man from Kishanganj, Bihar, has been persistently contesting elections despite never winning. As Bihar prepares for Assembly elections this November, Mahato is running as an independent candidate once again, fueled by public donations and his wife's small business efforts, demonstrating remarkable determination in his quest for public service.

Mahato is preparing to enter the electoral race once again.

At first glance, a gas cylinder delivery man might not seem like a typical political candidate, but Chhote Lal Mahato's passion for public service transforms him into a persistent contender during every election season in Bihar.

For the past two decades, Mahato, who delivers LPG cylinders in Kishanganj, has participated in every Lok Sabha and Bihar Assembly election, pursuing his aspiration to become an MP or MLA. Despite numerous unsuccessful attempts, his resolve remains unshaken.

As Bihar gets ready for Assembly elections scheduled on November 6 and 11, Mahato is once again throwing his hat into the ring.

Reflecting on his initial disappointment, Mahato, who resides in modest accommodations and provides for his family through his gas cylinder delivery job, shared, "I submitted my nomination papers for the 2000 Assembly elections when I was 23, but it was rejected because I didn't meet the age requirement."

Undiscouraged, he has continued to contest various elections, including municipal ones, and has even competed against veteran politicians like the late Taslimuddin, fondly known as the Gandhi of Seemanchal, and former Union Minister Syed Shahnawaz Hussain.

"I've been consistently participating in elections since 2004. Though victory has eluded me so far, I've never surrendered. This time too, I'll be contesting as an independent candidate," he informed NDTV.

"I receive substantial support from the public, with people making donations to help fund my campaigns. I deliver gas cylinders to households. The people desire a leader like me. This time, I'm confident of success. The voters will ensure my victory with their support," he expressed.

Funding his political campaigns has always required ingenuity. Mahato explained that while donations contributed significantly, his wife also generated income by selling goats, chickens, and eggs to finance his electoral endeavors.

Mahato's wife affirmed that he consistently supports people during difficult times, and she believes voters will give him a chance in this election.

Mahato declared his intention to continue contesting elections throughout his lifetime, with a focus on serving humanity. "If elected, I will not only work to alleviate the suffering of the poor but also promote development and create employment opportunities," he pledged.
