The Election Commission of India has issued an important warning to political parties regarding the use of artificial intelligence in the upcoming Bihar assembly elections. The directive specifically targets the creation of deepfakes and manipulated media, requiring all AI-generated or synthetic campaign content to be clearly labeled. This measure aims to protect electoral integrity and prevent voter manipulation as Bihar prepares for its two-phase elections on November 6 and 11.

On AI Deepfakes In Bihar Elections, A Poll Body Warning To Political Parties

The Election Commission has issued a stern warning to political parties regarding the misuse of artificial intelligence for creating deepfakes or distorting information during the Bihar assembly elections.

In an official statement released on Thursday, the poll authority reiterated its previous instructions requiring political parties to clearly label any AI-generated or synthetic content used in campaign materials shared via social media platforms or advertisements.

The Commission emphasized that political parties, star campaigners, and candidates must prominently declare when content is "AI-Generated," "Digitally Enhanced," or "Synthetic Content" to maintain transparency with voters.

The Election Commission also cautioned that it is maintaining vigilant monitoring of social media posts to ensure that the electoral environment remains free from manipulation and misinformation.

"The Commission advised the parties against misuse of AI based tools to create deep fakes that distort information or propagate misinformation over social media platforms emphasizing the need to uphold the integrity of the electoral process," the statement noted.

This warning follows earlier directives implemented during the previous Lok Sabha elections, where the EC established guidelines to prevent the spread of AI-generated misinformation.

The Bihar assembly elections are scheduled to take place in two phases on November 6 and 11, with vote counting set for November 14.
