Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced Saturday that the viscera sample report of popular singer Zubeen Garg will be received from New Delhi's Central Forensic Science Laboratory (CFSL) by October 10. This crucial report will determine whether poisoning was involved in the artist's death.
"We have intensified the investigation under the Judicial Committee's observation, and the viscera sample test report will provide a clear picture regarding the death," Sarma stated.
Earlier this week, co-singer Sekhar Jyoti Goswami was arrested by the Crime Investigation Department (CID). Reports indicate he claimed that NorthEast India Festival organizer Shyam Kanu Mahanta and Zubeen's manager Siddharth Sharma had planned the singer's murder in Singapore by poisoning his drinks.
Addressing these allegations, Chief Minister Sarma cautioned that Goswami himself is an accused in the case and might be attempting to deflect blame. "He is an accused under investigation, not a common person, so we cannot trust him blindly. We are investigating the poisoning angle, and clarity will emerge by October 11," Sarma added.
The Chief Minister visited Zubeen's family at their Guwahati residence on Saturday evening in what he described as a personal capacity. "Zubeen was like my younger brother, and his wife Garima was my junior at Cotton College. I met them, touched his father's feet, and had an hour-long discussion. We're all heartbroken by his death, and this meeting was purely personal," he explained.
Regarding the investigation of individuals residing abroad, Sarma acknowledged jurisdictional limitations: "Our police or legal system cannot compel them directly since they live in another country, but their family members in Assam can assist us. I urge the people of Assam to create pressure on their family members."
The Assam government has established a judicial commission chaired by sitting Gauhati High Court Judge Justice Soumitra Saikia. This commission will provide a platform for anyone wishing to share information about Zubeen's mysterious death, while also allowing the judge to oversee the CID investigation and examine evidence. The commission has authority to issue strictures if any lapses or wrongdoing are discovered.
"This will be a completely independent commission in Assam. For the first time in the state's history, a sitting judge has been entrusted with conducting such an inquiry. The government expects all details to be brought into the public domain once the investigation concludes," the Chief Minister stated.
