The daily gridlock at Delhi's Kashmiri Gate Inter-State Bus Terminal (ISBT) may soon become a thing of the past for commuters. According to officials, the government is developing plans for a new flyover that would connect Nigambodh Ghat (near Margat Wale Baba) with Majnu Ka Tilla, potentially transforming the entire stretch from Rajghat to Majnu Ka Tilla into a zone free of traffic signals.
Currently, the ISBT area experiences severe traffic chaos as vehicles approach from five different directions. An official from the Public Works Department (PWD) explained to NDTV, "We aim to improve traffic flow and reduce the congestion at ISBT. The proposed flyover would be constructed above the existing ISBT structure, extending over the Metcalfe Road traffic light, and finally descending near Majnu Ka Tilla."
The PWD has reportedly been instructed to prepare a Detailed Project Report (DPR) for this infrastructure initiative. Sources indicate that the project will likely require an investment of approximately Rs 500 crore and could take around two years to complete once construction begins. Meanwhile, plans for a previously proposed flyover project have been temporarily shelved.
This corridor, which accommodates thousands of vehicles daily, could see travel times significantly reduced if the project is successfully implemented.
While the initiative remains primarily in the planning stages, the Delhi government hopes this project will optimize traffic flow and alleviate one of the city's most notorious congestion hotspots. The key question remains: will this flyover finally provide a lasting solution to the persistent traffic jams at ISBT?
