Assam Police Team Sent To Singapore To Probe Zubeen Garg's Death

Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma announced on Monday that India is collaborating with Singapore authorities to investigate the death of popular singer Zubeen Garg, with a special investigation team (SIT) planning to visit Singapore for further inquiry.

The Assam government has formed a 10-member SIT under the leadership of Special DGP MP Gupta to investigate the circumstances surrounding the 52-year-old singer's drowning death in Singapore on September 19. Garg had traveled to Singapore to perform at the North East India Festival.

Chief Minister Sarma stated that event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta will be taken into custody within two days and confirmed that authorities are close to arresting Garg's manager, Siddartha Sarma.

"We have asked the Centre to activate the mutual legal assistance treaty with Singapore. The proposal has been sent by the Centre to Singapore, and our SIT team will travel there shortly. Within the next 2-3 days, significant developments will occur regarding the arrest of event organizer Shyamkanu Mahanta, and we have successfully tracked Siddartha Sarma as well. If he fails to surrender within the given timeframe, we will apprehend him," Sarma explained.

In a media briefing, Assam Director General of Police Harmeet Singh revealed that one team is currently in Delhi, while two SIT officials will be traveling to Singapore.

"We have the Mutual Legal Assistance Treaty (MLAT) with Singapore, and the necessary documents will be processed through the Ministry of Home Affairs. This process has already been initiated," he said.

"For the past week, you have demonstrated confidence in the Assam Police. Continue to maintain that faith, and we will ensure we reach a conclusion. Let them conduct their work, and everyone should provide their support," he added.

"Following Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma's instructions and in accordance with Indian law, the investigation will remain transparent, and proper scientific investigative methods will be employed," the DGP assured.
