Rajeev Verma has been appointed as the new Chief Secretary of Delhi, with approval from the Union Ministry of Home Affairs. This 1992-batch IAS officer of the Arunachal Pradesh-Goa-Mizoram-Union Territory (AGMUT) cadre will assume office on October 1, replacing the outgoing Dharmendra who completes his tenure at September's end.
Originally hailing from Uttar Pradesh, Verma's educational background includes a Computer Science degree from Roorkee and an M.Tech from the prestigious Indian Institute of Technology (IIT). His subsequent IAS career has spanned both Delhi administration and Central government positions, providing him comprehensive experience in policy formulation and implementation.
At 58, Verma is well-acquainted with Delhi's administrative machinery. His previous roles include Principal Secretary and Commissioner of Finance in Delhi (2018-2022) and Principal Commissioner of Housing and Urban Affairs at the Delhi Development Authority (2017-2018). His central government experience includes serving as Joint Secretary in the Defence Ministry (2013-2017). He has also worked as Chairman and Managing Director and Joint Secretary in Delhi's Transport Department.
Officials note that Verma's extensive tenure in Delhi, coupled with his diverse experience across finance, housing, and urban planning sectors, has equipped him with profound insights into the capital's administrative challenges.
Verma faces significant challenges in his new role as Delhi confronts multiple urban issues. Chief among these is the cleaning and rejuvenation of the Yamuna River, a project under close scrutiny by BJP-led governments at both central and state levels.
Effective coordination between various agencies and implementation of pollution control measures will be crucial, particularly as winter approaches. Beyond the Yamuna project, his agenda includes addressing traffic congestion, improving waste management systems, ensuring reliable water supply, and enhancing public transportation—all issues directly affecting Delhi residents' daily lives. Sustainable urban development and strategic infrastructure planning will remain his key priorities.
Unlike his predecessors who navigated the complexities of working under the AAP government, Verma will operate in a more aligned political landscape where the BJP controls Delhi, the central government, and the Municipal Corporation. This political harmony is expected to allow greater focus on governance rather than managing inter-governmental conflicts. Previously, Chief Secretaries often contended with political disagreements and allegations that complicated administrative decisions. While the current political environment promises smoother operations, expectations for performance and delivery will be correspondingly higher.
