Tamil Nadu CM Stalin Highlights Critical Fertiliser Shortage, Calls for Prime Minister's Intervention
Tamil Nadu's Chief Minister M.K. Stalin has appealed to Prime Minister Narendra Modi requesting immediate intervention to address the acute fertiliser shortage facing the state. In his correspondence, Stalin expressed serious concern that farmers could experience severe fertiliser deficits during the critical Kharif cultivation season. The Chief Minister urged prompt action to address the current shortfall and requested additional allocations to support the increased agricultural activity this year.
The letter detailed that fertiliser producers have delivered only approximately 57% of the Union Government's allocated supply between April and August 2025. This significant shortfall has resulted in Tamil Nadu facing deficits of 27,823 metric tonnes of Urea, 15,831 MT of DAP, 12,422 MT of MOP, and 98,623 MT of NPK Complex fertilisers. Stalin emphasized that without swift remedial action, farmers' potential for a successful harvest could be jeopardized.
Stalin highlighted that favorable conditions, including the early arrival of monsoon rains and sufficient water reserves in major reservoirs, have enabled farmers to expand paddy cultivation substantially. As of September, paddy coverage has increased to 5.66 lakh hectares, representing a 10% growth compared to the previous year. With these improved production conditions, the demand for fertilisers has increased dramatically.
To address the growing agricultural needs, the Chief Minister has requested supplementary allocations for September, specifically 40,000 MT of Urea, 20,000 MT of DAP, 20,000 MT of MOP, and 40,000 MT of NPK complex fertilisers. Stalin urged the central government to direct fertiliser manufacturers to supply both the outstanding shortfall and the additional requirements to prevent Tamil Nadu's farmers from experiencing hardship during both the current Kharif season and upcoming Rabi season.
