Group Captain Shubhanshu Shukla, the first Indian astronaut to visit the International Space Station (ISS) as part of the Axiom-4 mission, recently shared valuable information about handling medical emergencies in the space environment. He explained that space has no ambulances or hospitals, requiring astronauts to function as doctors, nurses, or support staff depending on circumstances.
"Medical emergencies in space present challenges completely different from Earth. Without accessible hospitals, astronauts must train to become their own medical team, depending on extensive practice and specialized techniques that could determine survival," Shukla posted on X (previously known as Twitter).
Shukla emphasized that the reality of being in space means recognizing that external help isn't available, necessitating constant practice for medical emergencies.
"We practice continuously. We typically use a mannequin that repeatedly simulates cardiac arrest so we can rehearse CPR, mouth-to-mouth resuscitation, and using the AED to restore normal heart rhythm," he explained while sharing footage of himself performing CPR on a training mannequin.
Shukla described the unique challenge of administering CPR in space as similar to performing "a zero-gravity upside-down wall push-up" due to the microgravity environment.
"Performing CPR in space isn't straightforward like pressing on someone's chest. In zero gravity, both individuals are floating, making downward pressure impossible. Instead, you position yourself upside down, secure your feet against the station's ceiling, and use your legs to generate force while performing chest compressions."
There's no ambulance in space. No hospital. No ER. So how do astronauts survive medical emergencies? How we do CPR is going to blow your mind!!!!Medical emergencies in space are unlike anything on Earth. With no hospital around the corner, astronauts train to become their own… pic.twitter.com/eJVUO4Srh9

'This is how you educate...'As the post gained viral attention, social media users praised Shukla for offering fascinating insights into space operations and educating curious minds about the complexities of space travel.
"Shuks is at it! This is how you educate the public and get people excited about space," commented one user, while another responded: "Wow! This is incredible!"
Another user remarked: "One of the best threads I read in recent days. Worth a bookmark. Thanks Shubhanshu."
Shukla underwent rigorous training for his three-week space mission. His experience aboard the ISS is expected to provide valuable insights for ISRO's upcoming Gaganyaan program.
