Following the district's renaming, Maharashtra's Ahmednagar railway station has officially been renamed as Ahilyanagar.
Mumbai:
Officials confirmed on Tuesday that the Ahmednagar railway station in Maharashtra has been renamed Ahilyanagar, honoring the legacy of Lokmata Devi Ahilya Bai Holkar.
The Union Home Ministry approved the name change, after which the Maharashtra government issued a formal notification last week to implement the renaming of the Ahmednagar railway station to Ahilyanagar.
This change follows the state government's previous decision to rename the entire Ahmednagar district as Ahilyanagar district.
"The railway station formerly identified as Ahmednagar is now officially designated as Ahilyanagar," according to a statement released by Central Railway.
"The station code ANG will remain unchanged for Ahilyanagar," the statement further clarified.
In the previous month, Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar sent a letter to Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, requesting the station's name be updated to align with the city's new designation.
The name change fulfills demands from multiple organizations and local citizens who had been advocating for the railway station's name to reflect the city's renamed identity of Ahilyanagar.
