Union Minister Jagat Prakash Nadda has revealed a transformative leadership lesson he learned from Prime Minister Narendra Modi years ago. As the nation prepares to celebrate PM Modi's 75th birthday, Nadda reminisced about his days as the Leader of Opposition in Himachal Pradesh during the mid-1990s.
The senior BJP leader credited this pivotal interaction with PM Modi as a turning point that "transformed him" and ultimately made the "seemingly impossible become possible" when their party later secured victory in state elections.
"In politics, sometimes a single guiding statement can alter the trajectory of one's entire life," Nadda shared on social media platform X.

Nadda recounted how Modi, who was then the BJP's state in-charge for Himachal Pradesh, inquired about his process for gathering Assembly issues. When Nadda explained that he prepared questions by studying newspapers and creating notes, PM Modi responded with a smile and valuable advice: "Nadda Ji, an opposition leader's role extends beyond the Assembly. The public should feel that their Leader of Opposition is accessible, willing to sit among them, hear their concerns, and work toward solutions."
Following this counsel, Nadda began traveling throughout Himachal Pradesh's districts, directly engaging with various segments of society including farmers, youth, employees, and workers.
"That experience profoundly changed me," Nadda admitted. He noted that his debating approach evolved, he gained firsthand knowledge of people's challenges, and developed confidence that opposition parties could effectively govern the state.
For the first time, according to Nadda, he recognized the significant disparity between information gleaned from newspapers versus insights gained directly from citizens.
Reflecting on Modi's mentorship, Nadda observed, "A single sentence or lesson can completely redefine one's understanding of politics. Narendra Modi Ji taught me this essential truth: a genuine leader is one who sits among the people and listens to their heartbeats."
Nadda further explained how this approach transformed the BJP's public perception from merely being opposition to becoming the authentic voice of the people. "When elections arrived, we hadn't even imagined coming to power, but Modi Ji's strategic guidance turned the impossible into reality," Nadda remarked.
Jagat Prakash Nadda served as Himachal Pradesh's Leader of Opposition from 1994 to 1998, during Congress rule under Chief Minister Virbhadra Singh.
This tribute forms part of numerous reflections being shared by leaders across India as PM Modi's 75th birthday approaches on Wednesday.
