Sunjay Kapur's Mother Alleges Massive Asset Concealment by Daughter-in-Law in Rs 30,000 Crore Inheritance Battle

In a high-stakes legal battle at the Delhi High Court, Rani Kapur, mother of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has accused her daughter-in-law Priya Sachdev Kapur of concealing substantial assets following her son's unexpected death. With Sunjay's annual salary of Rs 60 crore but only Rs 1.7 crore found in his accounts, the 80-year-old mother challenges the legitimacy of a Will that excludes her from the Rs 30,000 crore Sona Group empire that she helped build with her late husband.

New Delhi:

Rani Kapur, mother of late businessman Sunjay Kapur, has made significant allegations in the Delhi High Court, claiming that her son's wife Priya Sachdev Kapur has substantially concealed his assets. Senior advocate Vaibhav Gaggar, representing Rani Kapur, highlighted that despite Sunjay's annual salary of Rs 60 crore, his bank balance showed less than Rs 2 crore, with cryptocurrency holdings of approximately Rs 1.69 crore.

According to Rani Kapur's legal representative, Priya Kapur has withheld crucial details about Sunjay's assets from the court proceedings, raising suspicions that funds may have been transferred abroad.

"There has been massive concealment. The farmhouse in Delhi's Rajokri area was built by my late husband. It houses over 50 valuable artworks... Strangely, Sunjay Kapur had no life insurance policies, reported no rental income, and minimal mutual fund investments. With a salary of Rs 60 crore annually, we're being told he only had Rs 1.7 crore in his accounts," Rani Kapur argued in court.

Gaggar requested the court to direct Priya Kapur to provide comprehensive details of both her and Sunjay Kapur's assets dating back two years, while also seeking an interim status quo order.

"We request the court to obtain asset details from the past two years, not just for Mr. Kapur but also for Defendant No 1 (Priya Kapur), as we believe funds have been moved. Any interim measure should maintain the status quo ante because money has potentially crossed borders," he stated.

The senior advocate further argued that Rani Kapur and her late husband had jointly established the company. Despite her husband transferring all his assets to her, Rani Kapur has allegedly been completely omitted from Sunjay Kapur's Will.

"An 80-year-old woman has been informed today that she isn't even mentioned in the Will. There's not a single reference to her. She apparently has no ownership in the company built by her husband, which was exclusively bequeathed to her," Gaggar explained.

Rani Kapur is aligning with Karisma Kapoor's claim that the Will presented by Priya Kapur lacks authenticity.

She also contested Priya Kapur's assertion regarding the Kapur family tradition where husbands leave personal assets to their wives, pointing out that Sunjay's father had indeed willed his entire property to Rani.

"How can these two situations be compared? Priya was married to Sunjay for only seven years. This was his third marriage and her second. I was married to my husband for forty years. The differences don't end there. Our Will was properly registered. The witness to our Will had known my husband for three decades. In contrast, the witness to Sunjay's Will claims he wasn't even associated with the company before 2022," Rani Kapur contended.

Gaggar additionally argued that since Sunjay Kapur's death, Priya Kapur has been attempting to gain control over both his assets and the company Sona Comstar.

The Delhi High Court has scheduled the next hearing for December 3.

Sunjay Kapur, 53, passed away while playing polo in London on June 12. While cardiac arrest was officially listed as the cause of death, reports suggest he may have suffered an anaphylactic shock. His mother has alleged murder. Following his death, a fierce legal battle has ensued over the control of the Rs 30,000 crore Sona Group.

The Sona Group has clarified that Ms. Kapur is not currently a shareholder and has not held shares since 2019.

A "declaration of significant beneficial ownership" from May 2019 identified Sunjay Kapur as the "sole beneficial owner" of the company.
