New Delhi:
According to a parliamentary report submitted by the Union government, Uttar Pradesh recorded the highest number of discrimination complaints from minority communities in 2024, representing 35 percent of all reported cases nationwide.
Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju, responding to a parliamentary inquiry, revealed that the National Commission for Minorities (NCM) documented 1,390 complaints from minority communities across India during 2024, with Uttar Pradesh accounting for 482 of these cases.
Within Uttar Pradesh's 482 petitions filed in 2024, 195 pertained to law and order issues, 54 were complaints against police officials, and 49 involved land disputes.
Officials emphasized that these complaints constitute a substantial portion of the grievances addressed by the Commission annually.
Regarding Muslim and Christian Communities, Minister Rijiju stated that over the past five years, the NCM received 6,183 complaints from the Muslim community and 522 from the Christian community.
The Minister highlighted a notable decline in complaints from Muslims this year, with numbers falling from 1,246 in 2023 to 855 in 2024.
The overall volume of complaints from minority communities has fluctuated in recent years. In 2022, there were 2,423 complaints, while 2023 saw 2,000 complaints, including 734 from Uttar Pradesh. These comprised 185 law and order issues, 126 land disputes, and 86 complaints against police officials.
The government affirmed that the NCM diligently follows up on each complaint with the appropriate authorities. Rijiju explained that the Commission conducts hearings, organizes meetings, and visits affected areas, issuing recommendations when necessary.
The government has committed to ongoing monitoring of the situation to ensure that all grievances from minority communities receive prompt and effective resolution.
