A 51-year-old guest at a Chinese hotel was discovered deceased on November 20 after hotel staff failed to deliver his crucial heart medication, according to a report by the South China Morning Post (SCMP). This unfortunate incident has ignited significant debate on Chinese social media platforms and raised important questions regarding hotel liability and responsibility.
The deceased, identified by the surname Hu, had a pre-existing heart condition and was staying at the Yeste Hotel in Wuhan, Hubei province. Reports indicate that he had requested his medication be retrieved from a friend's residence, and his friend, Han Shun, had actually delivered it to the hotel earlier that day.
Han had assisted Hu with checking into the hotel the previous day, as Hu had completed work in a district reportedly far from his home. The following morning, Hu contacted Han requesting his medicine as he was feeling unwell.
Recognizing the urgency of the situation, Han promptly arrived at the hotel with the medication at approximately 9:40 am local time. He asked the front desk staff to deliver the medicine to Hu's room, but staff members allegedly refused to do so.
Tragically, hours after this interaction, Hu was discovered deceased by a member of the cleaning staff.
Hu's family has attributed his death to the hotel staff's decision to withhold the medication. However, the hotel staff have defended their actions, claiming they were unaware of the nature of the medicine and did not open the package to protect the guest's privacy. The report does not specify whether legal proceedings have been initiated in this case.
This incident has sparked intense discussions about hotels' responsibilities regarding guest safety and well-being.
One social media user commented, "I believe the hotel should be responsible for calling the guest to collect the medicine and checking on the guest when he did not answer the call."
Another user offered a different perspective: "The friend who delivered the medicine appears to be more responsible for his death because he did not tell the staff his name, room number or the urgency of his condition."
