PM's 'Delivery, Not Drama' Jab At Congress, Priyanka Gandhi's Sharp Reply

Prime Minister Narendra Modi delivered a pointed critique of the Opposition as Parliament's Winter Session commenced, suggesting certain parties remain unable to accept their Bihar election defeat. He expressed hope that Parliament would not become a venue for "meltdown" over electoral disappointments.

In one of his most cutting pre-session addresses, the Prime Minister stated his willingness to offer guidance to Opposition parties on effective performance while urging them not to obstruct Parliamentary proceedings during the Winter Session.

Modi highlighted the impressive voter turnout in Bihar, particularly among women, as fostering optimism. "The world is closely observing this. India has demonstrated that democracy can deliver results," he remarked. He emphasized that Parliament should maintain focus on national direction rather than partisan conflicts.

"The opposition must fulfill its responsibilities by raising crucial matters and moving beyond electoral disappointment. Unfortunately, several parties seem unable to accept defeat," Modi stated, in what appeared to be a direct reference to Congress.

The Prime Minister cautioned against transforming Parliament into either a battleground for processing electoral defeats or a platform for displaying political pride. He advocated for providing younger MPs across party lines opportunities to address issues in Parliament, adding, "There are numerous venues for theatrical performances. Those inclined toward drama should pursue it elsewhere. Parliament requires delivery, not drama."

Modi suggested limiting negativity and prioritizing nation-building efforts. Taking aim at Congress and other Opposition parties, he remarked that in certain states, public anti-incumbency sentiment following their governance is so strong they cannot face constituents. "Consequently, all frustration is channeled into Parliament. Some parties have initiated a new tradition of misusing Parliament," he observed.

The Prime Minister advised the Opposition to recognize the ineffectiveness of such approaches. "I stand ready to provide guidance on improving their performance, but they must allow MPs to express themselves freely. Don't sacrifice parliamentary representatives due to your disappointment and electoral defeats," he advised.

The Winter Session, which began today and continues through December 19, will feature 15 sittings. The government intends to introduce 13 Bills, while the Opposition has prepared to increase pressure regarding Special Intensive Revision of voter lists.

In response, Congress MP and senior leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra countered that SIR and air pollution represent significant concerns deserving discussion. "Parliament exists for this purpose. Raising and discussing issues isn't drama. The real theatrical performance is preventing democratic deliberation on matters important to citizens," she told reporters.

When questioned about the Prime Minister's comments and criticism of the Opposition, Leader of the Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, declined to respond.
