Parliament Winter Session Begins, Trouble Spots Include SIR, Pollution: 10 Points

The Winter Session of Parliament 2025 commences today amid several contentious issues.

New Delhi:

Parliament's Winter Session has begun with multiple controversial matters looming, including voter list revision and the death of an election official in Bengal, which are anticipated to generate significant debate between political parties.

Here are the top 10 points in this story:

A major point of contention between Congress and BJP is expected to be the First Information Report filed against Rahul Gandhi and Sonia Gandhi, which accuses them of criminal conspiracy in the National Herald case.

Opposition parties have requested a discussion on the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls currently being conducted across India.

The Trinamool Congress is specifically demanding a debate on SIR, citing an election official's death as evidence that the revision process lacks adequate planning and is placing excessive pressure on Election Commission staff.

The death of an electoral official in West Bengal, which the governing Trinamool Congress attributes to "overwork," is likely to be highlighted during the session.

Representatives from 36 political parties who participated in the pre-session all-party meeting have also requested discussions on the 10/11 Delhi blast and related national security concerns.

With air quality remaining extremely poor in the national capital region, many leaders are calling for this environmental crisis to be addressed. Congress has specifically requested discussions on both security matters and environmental pollution.

The government has minimized concerns about potential session disruptions. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju noted that during the all-party meeting, no participant explicitly stated an intention to disrupt Parliament.

"Some leaders indicated they might create disturbances over SIR. We are prepared to hear the Opposition's concerns," Rijiju stated.

"Parliament belongs to everyone and to the country. There are established procedures for discussing every issue in Parliament, including specific rules and traditions," he added.

The Winter Session is scheduled to conclude on December 19, comprising 15 sittings over 19 days. The government intends to introduce 13 legislative bills and one financial bill during this period.
