The upcoming summit marks Putin's first visit to American soil since his 2015 meeting with former President Barack Obama.
Announcing the meeting on Truth Social, President Trump wrote: "The highly anticipated meeting between myself, as President of the United States of America, and President Vladimir Putin of Russia will take place next Friday, August 15, 2025, in the Great State of Alaska. Further details to follow. Thank you for your attention to this matter!"
According to the Kremlin, the leaders will primarily "focus on discussing options for achieving a long-term peaceful resolution to the Ukrainian crisis," characterizing the process as "challenging" but one that Moscow intends to approach "actively and energetically."
During a White House ceremony for the Armenia-Azerbaijan peace accord, Trump suggested that a potential deal might involve territorial exchanges, stating, "We're going to get some back, and we're going to get some switched. There'll be some swapping of territories to the betterment of both, but we'll be talking about that either later or tomorrow."
In response, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky firmly stated on Saturday that Ukraine "will not give their land to occupiers."
"The answer to Ukraine's territorial question is already in the constitution of Ukraine," Zelensky declared via Telegram. "No one will and no one can deviate from it. Ukrainians will not give their land to the occupier."
Prior to the announced summit, Trump's special envoy Steve Witkoff engaged in a three-hour meeting with Putin in Moscow, which US officials described as "highly productive."
Earlier this week, on Wednesday, President Trump imposed a 25 percent tariff on India over its continued imports of Russian oil.
