Prime Minister Modi has extended an invitation to Putin for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit later this year.
US Senator Lindsey Graham has called on India to leverage its "influence" to assist President Donald Trump in ending the Ukraine conflict, shortly after Prime Minister Narendra Modi's conversation with Russian President Vladimir Putin. Graham emphasized that such action would significantly enhance Washington-Delhi relations.
"I've consistently told my Indian colleagues that one of the most impactful steps they could take to strengthen India-US ties would be to help President Trump bring an end to the devastating situation in Ukraine," Graham stated on social media platforms Friday.
The Senator pointed out that India ranks as the second-largest buyer of discounted Russian oil, which he claims "supports Putin's war efforts."
"I sincerely hope Prime Minister Modi stressed to Putin during their recent telephone conversation the necessity of concluding this Ukrainian conflict in a just, honorable and permanent manner. I've always maintained that India has influence in this situation, and I hope they'll exercise it wisely," Graham further remarked.
Graham was commenting on Prime Minister Modi's X post following his telephone discussion with President Putin.
Modi described having "a very good and detailed conversation" with "my friend President Putin." During Friday's call, Putin updated Modi on the latest developments regarding Ukraine.
"Reflecting the special privileged partnership between Russia and India, Vladimir Putin shared the important results of his meeting with US President's Special Envoy Steven Witkoff," according to the Kremlin's statement.
Prime Minister Modi expressed gratitude to President Putin for the information and reaffirmed India's "steadfast position advocating for resolving the Ukrainian situation through political and diplomatic channels," the statement continued.
Modi has invited Putin to visit India later this year for the 23rd India-Russia Annual Summit.
Graham has backed Trump's decision to impose additional tariffs on India for its Russian oil purchases, commenting, "Holding countries like India accountable for war profiteering represents a good starting point."
